Farmer’s real force behind J&K’s economy: Sham

JAMMU Mar 15: Asserting that farmer is the real force behind state’s economy, Minister for Horticulture and Floriculture Sham Lal Sharma has said that government has initiated numerous measures for their welfare, the major being the constitution of Kissan Welfare Advisory Board set up to function as a bridge between the Government and the farmers to address their issues expeditiously.
Addressing the farmers at a one-day convention, organized by the J&K Kissan Welfare Advisory Board at Rail Head here today, the Minister said that the Government was giving due attention towards the problems of farmers by encouraging various activities to improve their economic conditions. He said that farmers are showing great interest in the multi-crop system to earn handsome profits.
He said that today’s farmer has achieved great sensibility and are using innovative techniques being suggested by the experts. Laying stress on the research work to evolve hybrid varieties of fruits and vegetables, the Minister said that scientists should focus on the varieties which suit to the local conditions.
He said that central government has provided Rs. 200 crore for strengthening the Agricultural Universities in the State and hoped that the concerned will speed up the activities and produce quality seeds and evolve techniques which would help the farmers in boosting the production.
The Minister asked the farmers to adopt Alo-vera and Marigold flower cultivation in a big way as these have great demand in the market. He apprised that Government has made arrangements for proper marketing of these two crops. He said that an attractive component of subsidy is available for both these activities and farmers should take advantage of the scheme.
Among those present on the occasion included, Vice Chairman, Kisan Welfare Advisory Board, Rachpal Singh, Vice Chairman, Pahari Board, Mushtaq Bukhari, Director Agriculture, Ajay Khajuria, Director Horticulture, J.L.Sharma, Director Horticulture (Planning & Marketing), M.S. Qasba, Director Floriculture, K.K. Sharma, NC Provincial President, Rattan Lal Gupta and hundreds of farmers from across the Jammu division.
