3/16/2011 12:42:11 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, March 15 : Allegedly tortured by her in-laws for dowry, a housewife tried to end her life by consuming poison at her residence here today.
Asha Rani (31) swallowed poison at her residence after an altercation with her husband Avinash, police sources said and added she was struggling for life at the GMC hospital here. After four to five months of her marriage with Avinash on February 21, 2006, her in-laws started torturing her for more dowry, alleged Asha's father Amarnath, an assistant with LIC. He said Asha had also lodged a complaint against her husband with women police cell at Canal Road in September 2007. The cell incharge had called both of them and then sent them back after a compromise, he added.
Amarnath alleged that he had given his son-in-law, who worked in a private factory at Ambphalla, Rs 20,000 to buy a motorcycle in April 2008. He said when he allegedly continued torturing and beating Asha, they brought her back their home at Krishna Nagar and filed a dowry case against him in the court of law about two years back.
However, on the intervention of elderly persons from both sides, they sent Asha back to Avinash on December 20 last year and both started living in a room in the factory.
As the relation between them did not improve, she swallowed poison in the factory room this evening, he said. Asha was undergoing treatment at the GMC hospital. Police had registered a case in this connection. Amarnath called upon the senior police officers to book Avinash and the latter's parents in a dowry case.
