Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 15: In what could be seen as the first response to the loud criticism echoed by BJP, JKNPP in the Assembly over delay in appointment of Vice Chancellor for Central University, The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah today said it is not the government which is responsible for the delay instead some Jammu based MLAs who he alleged politicizedd the issue over the 'choice' of the VC. Agitated, Panthers Party MLAs staged walkout before raising the issue vociferously in the House again today.
"You cannot blame the government for this delay ……you have politicized the issue and restricted the choice of the Vice Chancellor of the Central University for Dogras of Jammu only……..," Omar said while pointing towards the protesting MLAs of BJP, NPP and JSM in the Legislative Assembly during the question hour.
The matter of VC for Jammu Central University was raised by Harsh Dev Singh of Panthers Party in the House for second time today only to be supported by MLAs of his own party, the members of BJP and Ashwani Kumar of JSM. As Harsh was trying to make his point in a loud manner, noisy scenes and pandemonium erupted in the House with all members on their feet expressing serious concern over the delay in the appointment of the vice chancellor.
When Harsh Dev asked a supplementary to question, he alleged that government was delaying the appointment of VC on one pretext or the other which had stalled the functioning of the University. To this Chief Minister intervened and attributed the delay to 'politics' over one person and restriction of the choice for a Dogra VC . " You had no problem having a particular person as VC of Jammu University….. you played politics over the appointment of the same person as VC of the Central University", Omar remarked adding "You want a Dogra VC and that too from a particular area, this is only politicizing the issue".
Pushing the ball virtually in the court of Jammu based legislators, the Chief Minister quipped, "give me a name of a capable and befitting person, I'll pursue at the Centre for his clearance within shortest possible time".However, the members kept on protesting , though Speaker Mohammad AKbar Lone also tried to intervene and pacify the agitated legislators from Jammu. Justifying the demand for appointment of VC from Jammu, they argued there was no harm if they ask on these lines which is a popular sentiment of the people of Jammu. "If we had army chief from Jammu why not a VC…….", contended Harsh Dev who was supported by Balwant Singh Makotia who said Dogras have ruled the state for over 100 years…..why the government was incapable of choosing one person as VC from the community". To this Aijaz Jan of NC who is MLA Poonch intervened and argued if they insisted a person from Jammu, the choice should not be restricted to Jammu….it can be person from Rajouri or Poonch", he said. Amidst din and clamour that prevailed in the House, Mubarak Gul, advisor to Chief Minister, argued with opposition members from BJP, NPP and JSM who raised the issue. JSM member Ashwani Kumar alleged that the government was delaying the appointment of the vice chancellor because of its 'discriminatory attitude towards Jammu region. While the opposition members from Jammu were making their point, Gul entered into a heated argument with them in a bid to prove their criticism wrong.Ashwani Kumar raised his pitch and questioned Gul's 'locus standi' and his right to speak on the issue. "In what capacity are you making noise and trying to shout us down," Kumar asked…..we have a right as members to speak and express concern over the issue", Ashwani remarked.
