Soz potential future CM of J&K: US | WikiLeaks unveils | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Mar 15: If fresh WikiLeaks cables are to be believed, United States of America (USA) sees a potential future Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in Prof. Saifuddin Soz, President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC). A cable sent by former United States Ambassador to India David Campbell Mulford immediately after the induction of Soz in Union Cabinet in July 2006. Soz-a professor -- is a moderate, earnest gentleman who has been a good friend of the United States and could potentially be Chief Minister of Kashmir one day, or rise even higher in the Cabinet, if he does a good job as minister, Mulford had written. The WikiLeaks cable has further revealed that Mulford had welcomed addition of Soz to the cabinet. "Soz is Kashmiri Congress Party Rajya Sabha member and a long-standing contact of the embassy's political section," wrote Mulford. In a major revelation, the WikiLeaks exposé affirms that Soz is a close confident of UPA chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Further, in another major revelation, Mulford had reportedly in his cable complemented Soz for working discreetly and diligently behind-the-scenes to help launch Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's dialogue with Kashmiri separatists such as the chairman All Parties Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, JKLF supremo Yasin Malik and People's Conference head Sajjad Gani Lone. Mulford had written to the US department of states in his highly confidential cable that for Soz's loyal service and successes on Kashmir diplomacy, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi elevated him to the Cabinet. He affirms that by inducting Soz, Sonia also ensured that a prominent and well-respected Kashmiri Muslim would occupy the important Water Resources portfolio since Kashmir has tremendous water resources, including massive untapped hydroelectric potential. Given the on-going dispute between India and Pakistan over the construction of the Baghliar dam on the Chenab river near Jammu, Mulford wrote in his cable that Soz's new job would be supervision of the India-Pakistan Indus Waters Treaty. He affirmed that Soz would play a key role in Delhi's efforts in Kashmir and its dialogue with Pakistan. —Early Times Report |
