Saying the right words
11/13/2006 11:02:13 PM

In today’s fast paced world our words too are quick to come forth and without much thought to what we are saying. We often speak more harshly, more rudely, more angrily than we need to. Such words never give us a positive result - and yet we continue on the same lines without a second thought or a re-look at our behaviour.

We take words for granted and do not always realize their value or rather their potential to harm and heal. After all words are the main tools with which you interact in this world.

I often wonder at the incidence of teen suicide and wonder if an encouraging word would not have changed the outcome. Every single individual has some strength, something positive in him and it is important for us as parents to focus on these and give praise and so self-esteem to a child on what he CAN do, rather than focusing on the negatives and his inabilities.

It is the words that a child hears about himself that give him self-confidence and a sense of self-esteem. Always talk in a positive manner and a child will naturally develop a positive outlook to life. Every parent loves his child as only a parent can - yet many do not express this love in words. It is natural every parent wants the best for their child but often they push them in the opposite direction by harsh words and constant negative criticism.

So also even in day to day life we are often brusque or cold in our behaviour and words to others - whereas inside, each one of us, only seeks love. Don’t we feel elated when someone says something positive about us or compliments us, don’t we vibrate positively towards a person who speaks with enthusiasm and optimism? Don’t well-spoken words attract us?

So why not be the giver of such words. It is so easy to spread joy to others - a kind word, a word of concern, a word of encouragement, a word of endearment, a word of praise or a word of affection - is all it takes. But words spoken, must be truly felt from the heart, for them to have a positive impact.

This is a simple tool of spiritual awakening that lies within each of us - and yet we do not use it. We feel to be spiritually awake we must give up this world or go to a remote forest or give millions in charity. But true spiritual awakening lies within and words spoken with the essence of love, peace and harmony is a first major step in this direction. This is something which is within the power of each one of us and an important step towards being a spiritually enlightened person. So let us begin the process in this simple way from today - from this moment itself.

And truly it is said - after you leave only your words live on - so let your words be sincere and sweetly spoken.
