More than 25 lakh electorate likely to elect 15959 Panchs in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Mar 16: More than 25 lakh voters are likely to elect 15,959 Panchs in the Jammu and Kashmikr, where 33 per cent seats have been reserved for women candidates. Non-Party basis Panchayat elections are being held in Jammu and Kashmir in 16 phases from April 13 after a gap of about one decade. Officials said as many as 2,51,9024 electorate are likely exercise their franchise in 15,959 Panch constituencies of Kashmir Valley against 1,85,9311 voters in 2001 polls. Similarly, 2,54,9951 electorate of Jammu province will cast their votes in 13,760 Panch constituencies. The Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) would not be used, they said adding that about 32,000 ballot boxes are required for conducting Panchayat elections in the state. Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) B.R.Sharma said that 33 percent seats have been reserved for women candidates. He asked Deputy Commissioners, who are also District Election Officers (DEOs), to display the rules in this behalf at all the offices of Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for the information of the public besides publishing the list in the print media. Sharma also urged upon them to ensure timely availability of election material including ballot boxes at all the polling booths including the staff deployed on duty. He also impressed upon them to strictly go ahead with Code of Conduct during the elections as prescribed by the Election Commission of India and ensure free, fair and impartial elections. He asked them anybody found disobeying the Code of Conduct will be himself responsible for the action under rules.
