Why not consult Kashmiri children as well? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 16: Men and women of Kashmir have suffered during the past two decades. And so have the children. New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir have met men and women. The children have shown greater maturity than elders at times. They, therefore, deserve to be consulted before the interim report is submitted. Valley's leading psychiatrist, Dr Mushtaq Margoob in an interview published in a local daily said the children of sufferers undergo hormonal changes. "In some cases, the child assumes role of the head of the family and this wreaks havoc with his psychology and physiology. He grows abnormally", he said. Terming such abnormal growth as `pre-mature maturity', he said such children can be compared to a balloon that has been inflated beyond capacity. "It withstands the pressure for some time but ultimately succumbs", he said. After being thrown out by her in-laws, the wife of a disappeared person (name withheld) sought refuge in a dingy hut near Gaw Kadal, Srinagar. She had a nice little daughter. Talking to a visiting journalist, the little girl then aged 7 years made a matured statement. "My mother always thinks about me. She is so young and has to live a long life. She must go for second marriage", she said. The stunned scribe could only moisten his eyes in response. Further enquiry revealed that she knew and understood what she had said. Normally a 7 -year-old kid cannot issue such a statement. Zahid lost his childhood looking after his blind mother who was widowed in 1996 during a nocturnal raid on her house. The brave boy took his mother first to Chandigarh and then to New Delhi for treatment. Unfortunately his mother could not be cured but he played his role well. He has a better understanding of the issue. The interlocutors owe their nomination to 114 deaths during last year's unrest. Most of the deceased were school going children. Talking to children may give creative ideas to the interlocutors than some `social workers' who run engineering colleges and NGOs funded by political organizations. |
