J&K govt ready to check school drop-outs | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 17: In order to further reduce rate of school dropouts, Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to introduce “Beti Anmol scheme" for the benefit of female students hailing from the BPL families. Under the scheme an amount of Rs.5, 000 would be kept in fixed deposit account which each female student could en-cash after completing 12th standard examination. This scheme is being introduced in all 97 educationally backward blocks in the state. Since a survey conducted six years ago had revealed that poverty was one of the factors responsible for increase in school dropouts and the Government has introduced number of incentives for encouraging students to prosecute their studies and one among the incentives was the introduction of mid-day meals in schools. Another scheme to check school dropouts among female students was to create employment avenues while they were enrolled in the schools. Reports said that emphasis was to be given on vocational trainings in the schools. Yet another plan was to open more schools in the backward and remote areas so that students in those areas received school education within their villages. Under the scheme over 4,000 new primary schools were opened in different parts of the state last year. Official sources said that in most of the cases teachers posted to far-flung areas refuse to join their places of posting. In order to encourage response from educated youth to the scheme the government has started regularizing these ReT and last year the services of as many as 24704 Rehbar-e-Taleem teachers were regularized.
