| Kathua Campus, Geology win in Cricket | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, March 17: Department of Geology and Kathua Campus won their respective ties to move into the next round of ongoing inter-department cricket tournament, part of the annual sports meet, on the campus here today.
In the first match of the day, Geology trounced Department of Physics and Electronics by 29 runs. Earlier, batting first, after winning the toss, Geology made 149 runs losing all their wickets, which, in reply, Physics and Electronics could not chase and completed the allotted quota of 20 overs for 120 runs with two wickets in hand.
Sajad was top scorer with 27-ball 30 runs while Atish and Ashwani contributed 18 and 15 runs respectively. From Physics and Electronics, Shivdeep took three wickets, followed by Arun and Akshay, shared two each.
Batting second, Physics and Electronics could score 120 runs for the loss of eight wickets thereby lost the match by 29 runs. Rakesh played fine innings of 42 (off 32 balls, 7x4) runs while Mohd Shafi and Arun contributed 21 and 14 runs respectively. Naveen claimed three wickets from Geology, followed by Liyakat, who took two.
Kathua Campus wins by 5 wkts
Meanwhile, in another match of the day, Kathua Campus defeated SHTM by five wickets. Batting first, SHTM made 138 runs for the loss of five wickets. Rakesh was main scorer with 45 runs. Jeet Dogra and Munish added 19 and 18 runs respectively. Rajinder bagged one wicket from Kathua Campus.
Later, Kathua Campus chased the total rather easily making 139 runs in 15.4 overs with five wickets in hand. Anil was top scorer with 26-ball 35 runs while Sourab contributed 21. From SHTM Deepak, Arun, Manoj and Rakesh took one wicket each.
Today’s matches were officiated by JD Singh, Rajeev Sharma, Raj Kumar, Vijay Dogra and Sat Pal (scorer).
BADMINTON
MEN: Department of Law, MCA and Law School won their respective matches to advance into the next round of men’s badminton competitions. MCA bt Department of Sociology 2-0: Sandeep bt Tauseef 21-08; Abhinav bt Mehraj 21-01. Law School bt Kathua Campus 2-0: Nikhil Gupta bt Anuj Gupta 21-06; Abhik Gupta bt Sourabh 21-04.
WOMEN: All the scheduled matches in women’s badminton ended in walkover. Department of Geography got walkover Department of Geology; Business School got walkover Department of Education; SHTM Department got walkover Department of Chemistry.
