Gujjars demand State ST Commission

Jammu, March 17: Alleging violation of constitutional benefits to Scheduled Tribes and non-implementation of ST reservation in jobs and promotions, the Gujjars expressed concern over the total neglect of their tribes in the socio-economic and educational development schemes and the gross irregularities in recruitment and promotion share of scheduled tribes communities.
Meanwhile, the leaders of J&K Tribal United Forum (TUF), an organization working for the affairs of Gujjar and Bakerwal, demanded setting up of State ST Commission to safeguard the interests of Scheduled Tribe communities.
The State executive body of Tribal United Forum (TUF) at a meeting today under the chairmanship of Roshan Din Choudhary, President of Forum in which besides the issue of State ST Commission, other demands were also discussed.
Speaking on the occasion, Roshan Din Choudhary said that the Gujjars and Bakerwals despite having declared Scheduled Tribe and identified as the one of the most backward groups of Society are still completely untouched by the facilities and provisions which are otherwise enshrined in the Constitution and are solely meant for them. Choudhary further said that the Gujjar & Bakerwal Tribes have not been given any reservation in the mass scale contractual and temporary recruitment done by the state govt. and at the same time they have also been deprived of the share due to them in all other developmental sectors.
Reiterating the demand of setting up the independent State ST Commission to monitor the implementation of various schemes for STs and to protect the rights of Gujjar Bakerwal Tribe, Zabeer Ahmed Bajjar, general secretary of Tribal Forum appealed the State Govt. to also establish the special cells for Scheduled Tribe in every department and institution.
He further said that the Gujjar and Bakerwal were granted ST status about two decades back but till date most of the organizations & departments of State Govt. have neither any roster for the recruitment and promotion of Scheduled Tribes has been prepared nor they have any calculation of vacancies and backlogs of posts.
Prominent among other who spoke on the occasion were Shah Mohd., Tanwir Ahmed, Advocate K.M. Bhatti, Khur eed-UI-Islam, Prof. Arif Sajad, Tanzir Khatana and Perwaiz Choudhary.
