Jammu & Kashmir withering away! | Assembly Session | | MINCING NO WORDS NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 17: Tehrik-e-Hurriyat says the unity and integrity of the state has to be maintained at any cost and that the entire population of the state, including more than four million non-Muslims, will have to accept the solution it has been advocating since decades. His solution is merger of the state with the theocratic and radical Pakistan. All-Party Hurriyat Conference (Mirwaiz), the ruling National Conference, the main opposition in the assembly People’s Democratic Party, the CPI-M, the CPI and several other outfits, which are operating in Kashmir, also say the same thing: Unity and integrity of the state has to be preserved at any cost and that the people of the state, including those belonging to Jammu and Ladakh, will have no other alternative but to live under the dispensation they have been striving to achieve. There is no fundamental difference between what the Tehrik-e-Hurriyat and other Kashmir-based formations have been demanding. It is obvious that all these formations are living in a fool’s paradise. Patriotic, liberal and religiously and emotionally committed as they are, the people of Jammu and Ladakh are not going to oblige them, come what may. There should be no doubt it. Complete merger with India is their watchword and they are committed to merging their identity with the Indian nation by severing their relations with those in Kashmir who have been propagating separatist and communal ideology and seeking to establish in the state a theocratic system of governance. The whole truth is that the insistence of the Kashmiri leadership on what they have been describing as a solution to the so-called Kashmir problem has widened the already rather wide gulf between the Kashmiri leadership and the people of Jammu and Ladakh and created a situation that would ultimately lead to the disintegration of the state. They and not the people of Jammu and Ladakh shall be held responsible if the state finally withers away because the latter have during the past 63 years have made supreme sacrifices to enable New Delhi to conciliate the otherwise unreasonable and ever-demanding Kashmiri leadership. They have finally realized that all of the sacrifices they made to keep the Kashmiri leadership in a good humour have gone down the drain and that the time has come to say goodbye to Kashmir and have a dispensation similar to the one in vogue in the rest of the country. The insistence of the Kashmiri leadership on its exclusivist or sectarian ideology is one of the two fundamental factors that have forced the people of Jammu and Ladakh to think in terms of snapping their ties with the former. In fact, Ladakh has already severed its relations with Kashmir for all practical purposes. The other is the utter failure of the Kashmir-based ruling elite to dispense justice to the suffering people of Jammu and Ladakh. The ongoing budget session has been witnessing uproarious scenes, exchanges of hot words, serious clashes and walkouts ever since February 28, when the winter session commenced. In fact, March 2011 has witnessed a remarkable unity among the Jammu-based political groupings such as the BJP, the NPP and the JSM, leave alone the Congress that has lost its way and become practically dysfunctional. All the three formations are working in tandem and making the Kashmiri leadership feel the heat. So much so that the ruling elite has gone totally berserk unable to counter the Jammu-based opposition’s well-founded allegations. That’s the reason the desperate and cornered Kashmiri rulers are making provocative statements, including the statement that Jammu doesn’t have any qualified person who could be appointed as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Jammu. As a matter of fact, the last 17 days or so have seen the Kashmir-based and Kashmir-centric formations and the Jammu-based and Jammu and nation-centric formations pulling in diametrically opposite directions, thus leaving none in any doubt that there is no meeting ground between them. What has added more fuel to the fire is the manner in which the Kashmir-based ruling elite is perpetrating injustice after injustice on the people of Jammu and Ladakh, as also the manner in which they have been abusing and castigating the Dogra rulers. The developments that have unfolded during these days of the budget session have virtually set the people of Jammu and Ladakh against the Kashmiri leadership, thus preparing ground for a full-scale movement in Jammu and Ladakh for securing separation from Kashmir. The Panthers Party has taken the lead in this direction. Chairman of the Panthers Party Bhim Singh, along with other senior part leaders, including MLAs, yesterday resorted to hunger strike outside the Raj Bhawan and submitted a detailed memorandum to the State Governor urging him to amend Article 370 so that the state is reorganized on a regional basis. The moral of the story is that the process of the state’s disintegration has gained momentum. It will be seen if the Kashmiri leadership is able to prevent the state from being submerged under the rising tide in Jammu and Ladakh. It looks extremely doubtful considering the fact that the Kashmiri leadership is unreasonable and unaccommodating and the Jammu leadership determined to implement its Jammu and nation-centric agenda. But more than that, it is the people of Jammu and Ladakh who have been setting the agenda and the parties like the BJP, the NPP and the JSM finally deciding to identify themselves with their respective constituencies. One thing appears obvious: The BJP, the NPP and the JSM are behaving in a responsible manner, notwithstanding some mistakes here and there. For, they have finally realized that they have no other option but to take on the Kashmiri leadership in and outside the assembly and fight for the Jammu cause as well as for the cause of the nation.
