| Inter-department sports meet of JU | | Impressive wins by Physical Education, MCA in cricket | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, March 18: Department of Physical Education and Department of Computer Sciences (MCA) today registered big wins to advance into the next round of the ongoing inter-department cricket tournament of University of Jammu on the campus here.
In the first match of the day, Physical Education defeated The Business School by seven wickets in a low scoring game. Earlier, batting first, after winning the toss, Business School bowled out for 52 runs in 13.5 overs of the 20 overs game. Tarish and Kartik were main scorers with 16 and 15 runs respectively. From Physical Education, Sajad Ali and Chander Kiran bowled impressive spells taking away three wickets each. Sunil Dutt took two wickets.
Batting second, Physical Education overhauled the opponent total in just 5.4 overs for the loss of three wickets. Sunil Sharma was top scorer with 20-ball 36 runs. From Business School, Tushar took two wickets and Bharat one.
Meanwhile, in another scheduled match of the day, MCA Department defeated Department of Statistics again by seven wickets. Batting first, Statistics bowled out for 65 runs in 16.2 overs. Nitin was only batsman who reached the double figure with 10 runs in his account. From MCA, Rahul was most successful bowler with four for 14, followed by Himanshu, who bagged two.
In reply, MCA chased the total in 9.5 overs losing three wickets in the process. Himanshu made 21-ball 31 runs while Vishal and Deepak added 14 and 10 run respectively. Rahul and Arvind took one wicket each from Department of Statistics.
Today’s matches were officiated by Raj Kumar, Vijay Dogra, Vijay Kumar and Satpal (scorer).
Semis line-up drawn in badminton
Semi-finals position has been cleared in both men and women’s sections of badminton event today.
In men’s semi-finals, to be played on March 22, Department of Law shall take on The Business School while Department of Physical Education shall be playing against Law School. Similarly, in women’s section, The Business School has been pitted against Department of Psychology while SHTM shall lock horns against Department of Urdu.

MEN: Law School beat Department of Mathematics 2-1: Abhik Gupta bt Sandeep 21-02; Gurpreet lost to Rajiv 17-21. Doubles: Abhik and Nikhil bt Rajiv and Rencheu 21-04. MCA defeated The Business School 2-1: Abhinav bt Vikram Dhawan 21-15; Sandeep Abrol lost to Rohan 21-15. Doubles: Abhinav and Sandeep bt Vikram and Rohan 21-17. Law School got walkover Department of Botany. Department of Physical Education got walkover Department of Psychology.
WOMEN: (Pre-quarterfinal) Department of Psychology bt Mathematics 2-1: Manpreet Kour lost to Richa 19-21; Ritu Singh bt Sakshi 21-06. Doubles: Ritu and Manpreet bt Richa and Sakhi 21-08. Quarterfinal: Department of Psychology outplayed Department of Geography 2-1: Manpreet Kour lost to Supriya Bloria 17-21; Ritu Singh bt Shivali Khajuria 21-15. Doubles: Ritu and Manpreet bt Shivali and Supriya 21-17.
Statistics, Economics win in men’s chess
In inter-department men’s chess tournament, started today, Department of Statistics and Department of Economics won their respective matches to move into the next round. The Results: Statistics bt Kathua Campus 2-1; Economics bt Department of Sociology 2-0.
