India's concern on terrorist activities in Pakistan | | | Though the Ministry of Defence has claimed that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has stabilised it continues to remain concerned over the activities of terrorists within the state and across the LOC.In its latest report tabled in the Parliament the Defence Ministry has claimed that the security stability has been the result of consistent operations the Army has launched against the terrorists last year. As a result of these operations as many as 238 terrorists were killed and 62 were apprehended during the last year. Though the Army lost 52 soldiers in the operations the troops had the satisfaction of having succeeded in improving the security environment in the state. At the same time the Army authorities do not favour any complacency and that too when Pakistan continued to be ambivalent in its attitude and approach towards terrorists who had been receiving arms training in camps in Pakistan and occupied Kashmir. Not only this :Paksiatn and its troops continued to assist terrorists in infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir. The report has said that 40 infiltrators had been killed and over 31 infiltration bids were foiled last year. The ministry report has expressed concern over the activities of terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It said that it was a matter of concern that the establishment in Pakistan had not acted fast and furiously against the terorrists when their activities had escalated threat to Pakistan's social and political fabric. As already stated by the Government of India in general and the Prime Minister in particular the Defence Ministry report too has advocated the cause for stable and prosperous Pakistan and Afghanistan on the plea that unstable Pakistan and Afghanistan pose a threat to India. This way if India has been consistent, during the last two years, in its demand for action against terror groups it was in the interests of Pakistan also.Hitherto Islamabad has not accepted New Delhi's demand for severe action against the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage. And the result was that during the last two years bigger incidents of terrorist strikes have taken place in Pakistan than in India. Again growing activities of extremists and fundamentalists in Pakistan may affect the mindset of those in India who are known mischief mongers. If Islamabad thinks that buying peace with these extremists and leaders of terrorist outfits was the need of the hour it was mistaken because terrorists ,especially the mercenaries, do not have any religion. Till date Pakistan believes, that too wrongly, that by supporting terrorist outfits and by engineering their training and by equipping them with sophisticated weapons and by assisting them to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir it would destabilise India and its polity. It may be its wishful thinking which does not have any foundation. Islamabad has been adopting an ostrich like attitude. If the events that have tken place since Mumbai carnage of November 2008 one would not hesitate supporting india's flexible attitude as far as its resolve to settle all the bilateral problems through the process of dialogue. Even though Islamabad failed to concede New Delhi's demand on action against terrorists and their handlers who carried out mayhem in Mumbai New Delhi has not fully blocked the channels of dialogue. During the last one year number of meetings, at various levels, have taken place between the two sides for the purpose of reducing the trust deficit. In fact Delhi gave weightage to opening of channels of dialogue with Islamabad to the resumption of talks with the Kashmiri separatists.Atleast in the interest of survival of Pakistan Islamabad needs to reciprocate Delhi's gestures.
