BJP walkout over tax on pithoos, ponywallahs in Katra | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA JAMMU, Mar 18: The State Legislative Assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes as Bharatiya Janta Party legislators created ruckus in the Lower House before staging a walkout over the charging of 12 percent tax on Pithoos (Coolies) and Ponywallahs by the Municipal Committee (MC) Katra. As the House commenced day’s proceedings this morning, the BJP legislator from Reasi, Baldev Raj Sharma suddenly got up and began to raise the issue of tax on Coolies operating enroute Shri Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine. The other BJP members on their feet supported MLA Reasi and also echoed their protest over the issue. However, the Speaker ruled that the BJP legislator can take up the matter during Zero Hour. It was during Zero Hour that Baldev Raj Sharma again voiced his concern over the charging of tax on coolies and ponywallahs. He alleged that charging of tax from Coolies and Ponnywallahs at the rate of 12 percent by MC Katra is a gross injustice with the poor operators. “We demand waiving of the tax…. It is nothing less than cruelty on thousands of Pithoos and Ponywallahs…. It is a nexus of some contractors, police and Municipal Committee authorities, who have vested interests.” BJP legislator Baldev Raj said He said that it is unfortunate that a hefty tax is imposed on Pithoos and Ponywallahas but they are not being provided with any benefits. “The Pithoos and Ponywallahs are being exploited by the MC Katra …. We have spoken to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board to take over the operation of mules and coolies and they are willing to compensate for the tax losses to the Municipal Committee,” Baldev said “I urge the government to stall the fresh tendering process as the bids have been invited for the grant of Mules and Mazdoor Contract by MC Katra for the year 2011-2012 and take up the issue with Shrine Board,” he added Seeing that no body from the treasury benches is giving a satisfactory response, Baldev Raj and his party colleagues started to shout and after a while they walked out of the House.
