‘NC vs PDP’ again in Assembly
Baig concern over ‘plight’ of Srinagar infuriates Sagar
3/19/2011 12:05:25 AM

‘PDP blocked all development of city during six years’
Early Times Report
Jammu: It was NC vs PDP again in J&K Assembly today when the stalwarts of two traditional rivals Ali Mohammad Sagar and Muzaffar Hussain Baig had a spat while both tried to outsmart and outwit each other to score what could be seen as ‘political points’ for their respective parties. When Muzaffar Baig showed his concern for ‘deteriorated’ face of Srinagar city, Sagar virtually grabbed the opportunity to ‘snub’ PDP’s apathy towards the city and alleged that party had blocked all avenues of growth and development for six years during PDP rule on ‘political considerations’.
It was during the discussion on grants for Housing and Urban Development Department when the veteran leader of PDP and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig while making his point asked the NC led coalition government to lay thrust on complete development of the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar, the latter in particular, it being the face of Kashmir for tourists coming from far and wide. Baig in his typical eloquent manner of expressing the points loaded with relevant references reminded the government of the JNEURUM schemes initiated and facilitated by the then Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad asked the government to seek extension for the project for five years so that full development could be ensured under ‘Mission city’ concept in the two capital cities. The PDP leader expressed concern over the existing scenario in the Srinagar city in terms of unplanned colonies and the related problems of sewerage and drainage , the land mafia, lack of basic facilities in the colonies. Baig also expressed concern over increasing pollution levels of Dal and Nagin lakes and said PDP had tried to seek World Heritage site status for these famous places to seek UN aid for their development. He also stressed need for increasing allocation for Municipalities in both the cities.
Even as Baig completed his speech on an optimistic note of NC led coalition shall be able to change the scenario, it was an all fiery Ali Mohammad Sagar’s turn to spit ‘venomous’ expressions loaded with attack on all fronts, including the recent issue of ‘Khanyar recruitments’ over which PDP raised much hue and cry. “ I do not point fingers at you in person….but the fact remains that Srinagar was completely ignored and deliberately overlooked in terms of plan allocation and other development works during PDP rule”, Sagar, who is Rural Development Minister in the government grumbled. I appreciate your concern for the city but there is difference between action and deed……….Sagar said raising pitch over PDP’s protest over Khanyar appointment issue.

“ On one side you are showing deep concern for Srinagar and on the other side your party and president created such an uproar as if this was a sin if some youth got a chance to get recruited ……they were targeted like anything ……..it was no matter to be raised in such a negative way……”, Sagar said in a raised tone and tenor. Though some PDP members including Baig himself got up and objected to what Sagar conveyed in a fiery manner, the latter continued uninterruptedly and even alleged that PDP had stopped all the development works initiated by Dr Farooq Abdullah during NC rule prior to PDP led coalition. “ It was an era of excesses on the people of Srinagar”, Sagar said. Even though PDP members contended it was not the time to speak on the Khanyar issue, Sagar raised the pitch again saying he had the right to ‘defend his people on the floor of the House’.
