NDA govt approached me for trust vote : Omar | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA JAMMU, Mar 18: Stirring a hornet’s nest, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today alleged that it was NDA government which approached him to support the Trust Vote in 1998-99 with an offer of a ‘favour’ in return of bailing out the then Union Government while rejecting the Wikileaks Cable’s expose that he was ‘bribed’ by UPA Government in 2008 for favouring the nuclear deal. While talking to reporters outside the Legislative Assembly this morning after his name allegedly figured in the WikiLeaks Cables, which were carried by a section of the print media, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he had extended support to the UPA Government over nuclear deal during the July 2008 trust vote on his own and not at the behest of Rahul Gandhi. "I honestly recall that Rahul Gandhi never called up to seek my support on the passage of crucial nuclear deal…. In fact I approached Rahul asking him whether I can be of any help as I was of the belief that India needed the nuclear deal to improve its energy scenario… Even I stated it in my speech on July 22 in the Lok Sabha during the debate on the deal.” Omar said “But I do remember that in 1998-99 when I was a Member Parliament, the then Power Minister in NDA’s regime approached me for the Trust Vote and told me how he can be favoured in return,” Omar Abdullah maintained “The NDA Minister, however, not offered me money but I must say that I sought sovereign counter guarantee related to power projects, which were not sanctioned at that time, just to ensure maximum benefits for the state, " he added “I recollect that I had a conversation only with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at that time but I do not recall any communication with Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi wherein he offered anything to the National Conference in lieu of our Vote over nuclear deal with the United States," Chief Minister said. “I do not really know what the truth is and whose hand is behind the WikiLeaks expose,” Omar said “But I do not believe that somebody of the stature of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi would ever sanction any sort of system of buying votes,” he added. It is worthwhile to mention here that a WikiLeaks cable from a US diplomat in India during 2008 had suggested that the Congress bought MPs to pass the nuclear deal with the US. According to the Wikileaks cable, Congress leader Captain Satish Sharma had said that Rahul Gandhi was “personally working on Omar (Abdullah).”
