Forest department to go for large scale plantations on World Arbour Day

JAMMU, MARCH 19-On the eve of “World Arbour Day” on March 21, 2011, the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department has decided to go for large scale plantations in whole state. The World Arbour day is being celebrated in the spirit of the United Nations General Assembly declaring 2011 as the international year of Forests, to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and development of all types of forests.
On this day the Forest Department envisages to create to record and generate a number of trees planted on this day. Conventional forestry species and conifers shall be the prime forestry species. All the sister wings of the Forest Department shall channelize and synergize their efforts in this regard. Department on the eve of “Arbour Day” re-dedicates itself to the cause of afforestatiion, protection of forests for clean air, clean water and clean environment.
The theme “Green Srinagar” shall be highlighted on this day. Lands shall be identified from Airport to Srinagar city and Srinagar/surroundings for large scale ceremonial winter plantations. Forest Department and State Forest Research Institute (SFRI) Jammu and Kashmir shall lay special thrust and shall liaise with the District Development Commissioner, Srinagar as well, for an effective plantation campaign.
The Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department has received prestigious “Indra Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Award” and Diamond State Award from IBN-7 (CNN), consecutively for two years, which recognizes the achievements of the citizens of the state and conservation ethos of the people of the Jammu and Kashmir in conserving green gold of the state.
On the eve of World Arbour Day Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department will initiate the massive scale plantation drives in the spirit of Forest Policy-2011 of the state and re-dedicate to the cause of afforestation, especially in view of climate change mitigation and adaptations, livelihood options and people’s needs.
