NH closed; trees uprooted, phones down in many areas | | | JAMMU: While the national highway was closed at Ramban, the unexpected dust storm, followed by heavy rains and hailstones with black clouds covering the sky, turned the day into darkness this afternoon, with trees uprooted, or damaged at several places on the lower Akhnoor road. The highway was closed to vehicular traffic at Panthal, Ramban, due to landslides triggered by heavy rains, police sources said.Nearly 100-150 vehicles were stranded due to the sudden closure of the road, the sources added. The BRO men and machinery had been pressed into service to clear the road of the landslides. Meanwhile, the high velocity winds left a trail of destruction in plains, especially the lower Akhnoor road areas.Sources said the tornado tore up several trees at Purkhoo and in other areas along the lower Akhnoor road. The electricity and telephone services in these areas were badly hit as poles also gave way to the high velocity winds and cables were snapped at several places, the sources added. Due to the violent and destructive storm, crops and the boundary wall of government higher secondary school, Domana, were damaged. Several mud houses also developed cracks. The destruction further led to road blockades and power breakdowns at various places. While people struggled to drive their vehicles and guard against violently shaking trees, pedestrians were seen running for cover.Officials of the concerned departments remained on their toes in the evening to clear roads that were blocked due to the uprooted trees and broken poles. |
