| Need to aware people about RTI Act: Sufi | | |
SRINAGAR
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Information Commissioner today said there is a need to create awareness among the people of the state about Right to Information (RTI) Act as the commission was getting applications not falling within its jurisdiction.
"We are getting complaints like denial of jobs, promotions and benefits by the government which is not within our ambit. So, there is a need to create awareness about the operation of RTI Act," G R Sufi, who took over as the first Chief Information Commissioner of the state in January, told reporters.
Sufi said that besides making people aware about the RTI Act, the bureaucracy and the officials should also be well versed with the law.
"The Public Information Officers cannot afford to hold back information which they are supposed to provide, he said.
Sufi admitted that there are some areas in the RTI Act which need to be looked into afresh.
"Give me some time ... we will have to look at the fee structure for RTI applications in the state," he said.
The state government charges a fee of Rs 50 per application and Rs 10 for every page of information furnished against Rs 10 and Rs two charged by the Central government for these services.
