Mirwaiz can’t take Jammu and Ladakh for a ride | MINCING NO WORDS | | NEHA
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 19: It is now more than clear: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, or for that matter other self-styled freedom fighters, who have been surviving and thriving on the blood and sweat of common Kashmiri Muslims and exploiting the name of Islam for the worldly gains since years, will neither reform themselves nor would they deviate from the path that has only brought death and destruction in Kashmir. It is also clear that they will not recognize the complexities and diversities in the state and that they will continue to air views that are uterly unacceptable and that have already caused an extreme form of bitterness between the regions and social groups.
How else should one interpret what Mirwaiz told the Friday religious congregation at Jamia Masjid, Srinagar? He, among other things, said: “The Government of India should start dialogue with Kashmiris and Pakistan and also implement the proposal given by us (in this case Musharraf proposal). Kashmiris should be accepted as principle party in talks and promises made with us by Indian leadership should be fulfilled…Hapenings in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen will have an impact on Kashmir…These struggles are for will and aspirations of people and Kashmiris too are fightingfor the same rights. There are cries for resolution of Kashmir issue in the wake of uprisings in Middle East. World has realized Palestine is core issue for peace in Middle East, Kashmir is for the sub-continent.”
The implications of what he said were clear. One, the aspirations of Pakistan and Kashmiri Muslims are identical and that New Delhi will have to respect them. In other words, he told them that their “freedom struggle is, in fact, a part of the struggle that Pakistan started in 1947 to merge Kashmir with it on the ground that Kashmir was an unfinished part of the partition plan. That those who were listening to his religio-political and secessionist sermon did not question the Mirwaiz is a different story that indicates how gullible they are. The bottom-line of the Mirwaiz’s sermon was that the Kashmiri Muslims have no identity and that they have to accept a sort of solution that enables Pakistan to enslave them and exploit them.
Two, the Kashmiri Muslims are the sole factor in the state’s situation and, hence, they alone should be engaged be New Delhi. It is obvious that his whole approach is communal and short-sighted. That he thought it prudent to create an impression that the aspirations and will of the Kashmiri Muslims and the other sections of population in the state are identical simply suggests how outrageous his approach. It seems he is living in a world of the past. The people of Jammu and Ladakh are an altogether stuff. They are nationalist to the core and they have consistently denounced and neutralized what could be legitimately termed as the Kashmiri separatists’ malicious propaganda and vicious campaign. It appears the Mirwaiz has forgotten the Jammu of 2008. The people of Jammu and Ladakh are as they are and they have umpteen times showed the self-styled freedom fighters their rightful place, notwithstanding the New Delhi’s very soft aproach towards them.
Three, the rulers in Delhi have not fulfilled the promises they made from time to time. New Delhi has never ever made any promise because there was no need to hold out any promise. Yes, Jawaharlal Nehru did talk about plebiscite, but his promise was unconstitutional. He had no right to hold out such a promise. The constitutional position is that the ruler of the state had the right to take a decision on the state’s accession and he took that.
In any case, the Mirwaiz should accuse Pakistan and not India of violating the UN resolutions on J&K. The entire world knows what these resolutions provided for, who violated these resolutions and why and that’s the reason the UN Security Council has dropped J&K from the list of disputed territories. The fact of the matter is that the Mirwaiz is not that naïve. He is fully aware of the factual position. But his compulsion is that he has no other option but to take recourse to falsehood to remain in limelight and lead a luxurious life and all the cost of the Kashmiri Muslims.
Four, The struggles in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Yemen are “for will and aspirations of people and Kashmiris too are fightingfor the same rights.” Only partly right. The very comparison of the so-called unrest in Kashmir with the upheavals in these Middle East countries is outrageous. There is no comparison. The people in the Middle East countries are simply nationalists. They are not secessionists. They are up in revolt against the dictators. They are against Sheikhdoms. They want democratically-elected governments. They want constitutional guarantees, civil and political rights and an effective and real say in the administration and it is their fundamental right.
The story of Kashmir and Kashmiri leadership is different. Kashmir is over-empowered, over-fed and over-pampered and Kashmiri leadership secessionist and communal and as prosperous and powerful as the Sheikhs in the Middle East. Again, it is a different story that there is none either in Kashmir or in New Delhi to question the extremely motivated, provocative and poisonous formulations. Had they done such things in any of the Middle East countries as they have been doing in Kashmir and elsewhere in the country since decades, they would have surely by now become a story of the past.
The truth is that it is New Delhi and the innocent Kashmiri Muslims who have allowed these self-styled freedom fighters to indulge in the kind of politics they have been indulging in with immunity and going scot-free. It is indeed time for the authorities in New Delhi to rein in the rabble-rousers and set the Indian house in Kashmir in order. |
