Ladakh region remains cut off, Kashmir highway reopens for both ways | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Mar 21 : Heavy vehicles were allowed from both side on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway from this morning while the Ladakh region and far flung remote areas near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir remained cut off due to snow. A traffic department official said today that heavy vehicles, including trucks, were allowed from both sides on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the only road linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, from this morning. He said passenger vehicles were allowed to ply from both sides yesterday when the highway reopened after remaining closed since March 19 afternoon due to landslides, triggered by rains. To avoid any traffic jams, heavy vehicles, including trucks loaded with essentials were allowed from Jammu yesterday and no heavy vehicle was allowed from here to Jammu. Today the highway remained open for all vehicles from both sides, he said. Meanwhile, the highway, connecting Ladakh region with the rest of the state, remained closed since December 1 last year due to snowfall. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway, has already started snow clearance operation on the highway from both Menamarg and Sonamarg. It will take more than a month to put through the highway as sophisticated snow clearance machines have been put into service since last week, official sources said. The District authorities in Kargil have also started snow clearance operation on many roads, connecting Zanaskar and other far flung areas, which also remained cut off since December last year. Snow clearance operations have also been started to connect the cut off areas near the LoC in north Kashmir districts of Bandipora and Kupwara.
