Experts suggest road widening to prevent accidents | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 21: The experts have suggested widening of existing roads instead of constructing new ones. Referring to the allotment of Rs.857 crores in the state sector and Rs.900 crores in the central sector on the construction of roads and bridges, experts said that there was an urgent need for upgrading and widening road links between Jammu and Doda and between the state's winter capital and Kishtwar, Bhaderwah and adjoining areas. Similarly there was need for widening of the roads linking Jammu with Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Gool and other remote areas in Udhampur and Reasi districts. Blaming existing narrow roads for accidents, the experts have suggested to the Government that at least 60 per cent of the amount earmarked for construction of roads and bridges be spent on widening and upgrading the road links with Doda, Kishtwar, Bhaderwah, Poonch, Rajouri , Reasi and other hilly and far-flung areas. Proper checking and appropriate traffic police, they said, can go a long way in preventing accidents. A survey carried out by one NGO has revealed that every buses plying on hilly routes carry 20 to30 per cent more passengers than their seating capacity and this should be checked so that the rate of road accidents declines.
