HC quashes girdawar's sentence after 27 yrs | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21: High court judge, Justice Sunil Hali has ordered the quashment of the sentence given to a girdawar 27 years back by special judge anti-corruption, Srinagar. Manohar Nath, who was then girdawar halqa Mungam Tangmarg, was caught red handed by state vigilance organisation (SVO) accepting a bribe of Rs 50 on December 7, 1983, from Ahad Shah for demarcating his land at Tangmarg. Special judge anti-corruption, Srinagar, had convicted and sentenced the girdawar under section 5(2) of prevention of corruption Act, 2006, to undergo one year imprisonment. Against his conviction, he had filed an appeal in the high court which had then granted him bail, suspending his sentence. In his judgement, Justice Hali observed that there was no sufficient material to hold the appellant guilty. He ordered to set aside Manohar's conviction and sentence as a consequence of which the judgment of trial court stood quashed. The accused was acquitted of the charges levelled against him.
