Thousands of families deprived of BPL benefits, seek CM’s intervention | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21: With failure of Consumer and Public Distribution (CAPD) Department to prepare the list of Below Poverty Line (BPL) people thousands of such families in the J&K state have been deprived of the benefits under the BPL category. According to sources there is high resentment among the masses especially belonging to BPL category for their non inclusion in the list. The people blame CAPD Department for deliberately not including the genuine families whose monthly income is less than Rs 3000 in BPL category. ``We have made umpteen trips to the Directorate of CAPD in Jammu demanding our inclusion in the BPL category but to no avail’’, said Ram Kumar a social activist. A large number of families whose monthly income is less than Rs 3000 have not been included in BPL category deliberately by the CAPD authorities and they are deliberately delaying the formation of lists resulting lot of hardships to these poor families, he added. Kumar said these poor families who have to purchase the ration at the APL rate or in higher rates in the market are unable to make their both ends meet in these tough times. The selection of families is done on the political considerations and the people linked to opposition parties are being deliberately not included in the list, said Ahmed Khatana Gujjar from Nagrota. He said hundreds of families in Bantlalab, Gurrah Keran, Barnai, Nagrota and other areas in Jammu district have not been included in the list despite the fact that the monthly income of these families is not more than Rs 2000 also. One old Hindu Brahman in Barnai who feeds his family after selling the milk of his cow had umpteen times approached the higher authorities pleading for inclusion of his name in the BPL the list framed by the Department but no one heard his woes. Same is the case with hundreds of such genuine families in the state. The issue of non inclusion of genuine families in the BPL list was also raised by legislators in both upper and lower houses during the ongoing session. Even it was demanded that a fresh survey be conducted in this regard so that the deserving people get justice. But till date the Government has failed to take action in this regard. Some opposition members in the Assembly had also urged the State government to make a recommendation to Centre asking it to supply the surplus foodgrains which are lying scattered in various states to J&K for the supply of people living below poverty line. Though dozen of delegations of people from different parts of the Jammu region visit the CAPD department daily demanding the inclusion of genuine people in the list the authorities every time avoid them by saying that fresh survey will be conducted in their localities soon. Expressing dismay over the style of working of CAPD Department, Kumar said that why it has not conducted a proper survey till date. This indicates that the authorities too have also malafide intensions in this regard. Seeking immediate intervention of the Chief Minister, Kumar has urged him that Government should take necessary steps in this regard so that the genuine families do not suffer any more.
