Woman dies during delivery, family protests | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21: After the death of a woman while delivering a baby at SMGS hospital here today due to the alleged negligence of doctors, her family members staged a protest. The baby too died soon after the delivery, police sources said, quoting protesters. Bholi Devi, wife of Kuldeep Singh of Ratanpur, Samba, was admitted to the SMGS hospital Sunday after she developed labour pain. The woman and her baby, however, died during the delivery, which sparked off strong protest, with the family members raising slogans against the doctors and the health authorities. They alleged that the deaths had taken place due to the alleged negligence of doctors. The angry family members, who were later joined by BJVM activists, later marched towards the nearby Indira Chowk and placed the woman's body in the middle of the road, blocking it to vehicular traffic. The protesters demanded a probe into the incident and a legal action against the allegedly erring doctors. Following an assurance from senior civil and police officers, who spoke to them, that justice would be done in the case, they later dispersed peacefully and took the bodies of the woman and the infant home in their native village for last rites. The protest continued for about 15 minutes.
