| Resentment brewing against move to construct hotel in Heritage complex | | Political parties drawing up plans for a ‘joint movement...’? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Mar 21 : The resentment of Jammu based political parties over the alleged move of the government to lease out a portion of land in Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex expressed in the Assembly last week will not remain confined to the House. The emotive issue which is close to the heart of Jammuites is all set to be raised vehemently outside the Legislature as well in days to come, a political pressure strategy intended to stall the construction of any commercial complex within the Heritage complex of immense historical importance.
Sources said both BJP and J&K Panthers Party along with Jammu State Morcha , the legislators of which raised the issue vociferously inside the Assembly on Friday last, are now considering to raise the matter in a big way outside the House given the fact that anger and resentment is brewing up among common masses after it came to light that a five star hotel is being allowed to be constructed by the government around the ancient complex , the seat of Dogra rulers. Sources said the parties are drawing up strategies as to how this issue needed to be raked up so that it could make a resounding impact in Jammu, in a similar way the Amarnath land agitation rocked the entire province in the year 2008.
It however remains to be seen as to what would be the ‘modus operandi’ of the agitation or campaign, if any, to be launched by these parties over the issue. While all the three parties cumulatively raked up the matter in a reverberating manner inside the House by putting up a united face and condemning the reported move unequivocally, it would be interesting to note whether they will take up the issue in a united way or in separate forums outside the Assembly.
Sources within the BJP however confirmed that following raising up of the issue in the House last week, the BJP leadership held meetings in which it was decided that the issue being close the heart of Dogras would not be taken casually nor would the party allow further movement towards use of the area for any commercial activity.The party leadership, sources said is seriously considering that in order to make the issue resound in a big way on the roads of Jammu, the party would not hesitate to rope in other like minded political and non political organisations for the ‘movement’ or campaign that may be seen in Jammu in offing.
“We have held meetings in which the leadership took a serious view of what is going on in the Heritage Complex.............the party has also taken serious view of the fact that government is taking steps in this direction in a hush hush manner ...........this only amounts to a conspiracy being hatched against the Dogras by the government in connivance with a handful of people in the so called Conservation Committee”, said a leader of the BJP, wishing anonymity. Whatever has now come to light has not only surprised the political leadership but also hurt the sentiments of common people of Jammu who have emotional attachment with this historical complex, he said adding that government will not be allowed to take Jammuites for a ride on sensitive matters like this. The common people are viewing this move as the attempts of the government to wipe out all traces of Dogra heritage, that of rulers and their rich cultural remnants , he further said, justifying the serious concern being expressed from all quarters.
Mubarak mandi complex situated in the walled city has many buildings with architectural excellence depicting rich cultural grandeur of Dogra kings.It is pertinent to mention that the anger and resentment of political parties as also the NGOs is pointed more towards the Heritage Society which was established for the purpose of conserving this historical complex with thrust on maintaining and sustaining the original grandeur of various buildings in terms of the architecture and historical artefacts housed in them. The criticism is centred around the functioning of the Society with the placement of some persons in the body being questioned in more than one context. How the government is going to handle the issue in the wake of increasing hue and cry likely to take the shape of a ‘controversy remains to be see.
