Supporters of one group 'exchange blows' in presence of new incharge | Factionalism in Cong takes 'ugly turn' | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 21 : The factionalism in the state unit of Congress which has been eating into the unity and image of the organisation for a long time now, took an ugly turn today when the supporters of the two groups resorted to fisticuffs and exchaged blows in presence of senior leaders from Centre. In the 'melee' the two 'warring' sides not only assaulted each other but also did not spare the newly appointed incharge of J&K, CWC member Mohan Prakash , who was allegedly hit by supporters of one of the group while fighting. It so happened in the Government guest House at Srinagar where the senior leaders alsong with Mohan Prakash were meeting the delegations of people including those from withing the party. Sources said the Congress leaders heard patiently the problems and hardships being faced by the workers at the organisational level but simply refused to to register or hear nay complaints or greivances against any leader of the party at the local level. The leaders conveyed to the delgation represnetatives that they had come to hear about their problems and difficulties and would not pay any heed to the 'grouses or grumblings' at the political level. Sources said the members of one of the delegation insisted to hear on that account, contending that they wanted a change in the organisational structure as also change at the level of the PCC chief, the incharge J&K affaiarns refused to hear and conveyed such matters were not within his jurisdiction and it was to be decided by the High Command. The continuous insistence infuriated the members of the other delegation, believed to be the supporters of the other faction and both indulged in abusive language against each other. The verbal duel turned the atmosphere hot only to aggravate the surcharged envioronment when some supporters started beating each other. Exchange of blows continued and in the midst of this 'fight scene', Mohan Prakash was also reportedly hit in the chaotic conditions that prevailed for some time, sources said. When the situation could not be controlled by the functionaries of the party present isnde the room, the help of Police and para military forces was repotedly sought to defuse the situation and pacify the fighting groups, believed to be scores in number. Sources also said that in the delegation there were many casual employees of one of the departments in the government led by their leader. While this 'dramatic' situation happened, the leaders from outside the state who had come to attend the party rally held at Anantnag held on Sunday, were stunned and their attempts to control and pacify the warring groups did not succeed. This is for the first time that the factionalism has taken such an ugly turn in public with supporters of one group in paticular resorting to such extreme steps which did not even spare the newly appointed incharge of the party in the state. While the Congress high command may or may not take serious view of the development in bitter taste, sources said the authorities of the state Guest House have taken a strong notice of the development and even shot a letter to the Chief Minister , seeking permission, that in order to have decorum of the prestigious place meant for guests and important dignitories from outside the state, they may not allow delegations of the political parties inside the premises in future.
