J&K exported 7.50 lakh metric tonnes of apples in 2009-10 | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 22 Jammu and Kashmir government today said 7.50 lakh metric tonnes of apples, produced in the state, have been exported outside the country, during the last financial year. "7.50 lakh metric tonnes of apples have been exported outside the country and a total of 13.73 lakh metric tonnes of apples were produced in the state during last financial year", Minister for Horticulture Sham Lal Sharma told Legislative Assembly in reply to a question of PDP member A R Veeri. The apple production in the state has increased compared to the last financial year. In the year 2008-09, 13.32 lakh metric tonnes apples were produced, out of which 6.83 lakh metric tonnes were exported, he added. Sharma informed that the department has taken several steps to establish cold storage facilities including establishment of four cold stores under central sponsored schemes approved by the government. The government will also conduct a techno economic feasibility study for establishment of a cold store chain in the state, the report of which has been received, he said. The state level steering committee has approved action plan for Horticulture mission for Himalayan states to set up cold storage chain and has invited tenders from private parties for availing assistance of up to 50 per cent under the project, he said.
