Govt to focus on improving irrigation network | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 22 :-Following the decision of the state Government to encourage farmers to go in for double cropping in Jammu and Kashmir the sector of irrigation has been allotted Rs.332 crore during the current financial year. Official sources said that the Government has decided to spend Rs 332 crore on extending irrigation facilities in those areas where the farmers depend on rain for irrigating their fields. Sources further said emphasis on development of irrigation facilities was to be laid in the Jammu region where the number of canals is quite limited when compared to the Kashmir valley. Till two decades ago 4.86 lakh acres used to receive canal water for irrigation but this facility has dwindled with drop in the water level in the lakes and the river Jehlum. According to an official report says that though farmers banked on 17 canals for irrigating their crop fields in the Kashmir valley the gradual decrease in water level resulting in death of some canals has forced the Government to earmark increased amount for investment in developing irrigation system in the valley too. At present not more than 25 per of the cultivated area in the Jammu region is covered under irrigation and the rest banks on rain water. The Minister for Agriculture, G.H.Mir recently said that the state has to bank on lift and sprinkle irrigation system because of various factors. He explained that developing irrigation facilities had been limited by the Indus Water Treaty under which restricted use of water of the Jehlum, the Chenab and the Indus has to be used for irrigation and power generation. He said since it was not possible to carry canal water to the Kandi areas in the state the Government has to lay emphasis on sprinkle irrigation. He said that in the plain areas too the Government has to bank on lift irrigation Mir said that irrigation, besides genuine seeds and timely availability of fertilizers and pesticides were important for facilitating farmers to take to double cropping. He said if these facilities were not available "our project on increasing food grains production through double cropping may fail."
