Weather improves in Kashmir, temperature drops in Ladakh

Srinagar, Mar 23 : The weather has improved in the Kashmir valley though the minimum was still below normal, but dropped slightly in Ladakh region, where the Kargil with minus 5 degrees Celsius was coldest.

Meanwhile, Army rescued and provided food and shelter to more than 200 passengers after their vehicles got stranded at various places on Chowkibal-Nastachun pass and Tangdhar in north Kashmir.
A Met department spokesman said here today that there was slight improvement in the weather conditions in the Valley, where the minimum was still below normal.
Gulmarg, a world famous ski resort in north Kashmir, remained coldest in the valley though there was an improvement of about two notches. Against yesterday's minus 4.8 degrees minimum temperature, it was minus 3 degrees this morning.
The snow on the slopes would last longer this time due to minus temperature.
At Pahalgam, a health resort in south Kashmir, the minimum was minus 1 degree against yesterday's minus 2.2 degrees.
The summer capital, Srinagar, recorded 3.6 degrees, about 0.5 degree below normal.
People in Ladakh region continued to shiver during night, with border town of Kargil, coldest after the minimum dipped to minus 5 degrees against minus 4.4 degrees of yesterday.
Leh also witnessed a slight drop in the minimum temperature.
Against yesterday's minus 3 degrees, it was minus 3.6 degrees this morning.
Meanwhile, a defence ministry spokesman said due to inclement weather and heavy snowfall, the Chowkidbal-Nastachun Pass-Tangdhar was blocked at several places.
He said about 40 Tata Sumo vehicles along with passengers were stranded at various places for the night in freezing temperatures.
The Army troops deployed at Nastachun Pass came forward to help the distraught persons and provided shelter, warmth and food.

Besides this, all available Army resources and equipment were pressed into service to clear the road
