| Natwar plans UP campaign against Congress | | | New Delhi, Nov. 14 Former external affairs minister K. Natwar Singh will be campaigning against the Congress Party for the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. Brimming with enthusiasm, the former Congress leader told this newspaper that he had not decided who he would campaign for, “but I will certainly be there to help the secular forces.”
Mr Natwar Singh and Samajwadi leader Amar Singh had established a good rapport after the former was issued a showcause notice by the Congress over the Volcker Committee report. Mr Singh, who is clear that he will not go near the BJP, is likely to campaign for the Samajwadi Party, which is most likely to remain in opposition to the Congress in the state. His relations with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Jan Morcha are “negligible”, according to sources, and the Samajwadi Party is more than keen to enlist his services for the crucial state elections.
Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has been wooing mid-level Congress leaders in Uttar Pradesh, with many of them marginalised by New Delhi and the present state leadership. Sources said several Congress leaders from the state could shift their allegiance to the Samajwadis on the eve of the elections as they were particularly disturbed about being “ignored” on issues concerning Uttar Pradesh.
A senior leader seen in the company of the Uttar Pradesh. chief minister despite the strained relations between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party is Mr Anil Shastri, who has been praising Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav from public platforms for spending time and money to honour the memory of his father, late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Mr Anil Shastri, who has been a spokesperson for the AICC and is a respected leader in the party, recently shared a dais with Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav and made it clear that the state government under the Samajwadis had shown more concern for the late Congress Prime Minister than the UPA government at the Centre.
