Shocking cancerous growth, shortage of paramedical staff adding to woes | | | Vaibhavi Chandel EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 23: Cancer has emerged as one of the most deadly disease in the near past. The number of patients is increasing with each passing year, but not much heed is being given to improvise the treatment and facilities being provided to these patients. The number of the cancer patients is ever-increasing in the state. Jammu region contributes for the maximum number of cancer patients and after that comes Udhampur, Kathua, Rajouri, Doda and Poonch. It is reported that mostly people come to know about this disease when it is mostly in the last stages so room there the journey is really very tough. Most of the cases are reported when the patients are already in last stages and this adds to the complication of this disease. At present, the treatment of the cancer in Jammu is available only at Medical College. Even the patients who approach medical College for treatment, 65 to 70percent of them are already in last stages and that adds to the reason that even after treatment the count of the patients who would recover is quite less. Generally hardly 30- 35 percent of the patients are lucky enough to beat this disease and to live. “Very few patients could survive. Generally 65 percent of the patients lose the battle of life and only 35 percent of the patient could survive and it happens because of the delayed treatment,” says Dr Ashutosh Gupta, HOD, Regional Cancer Institute at GMC. “ As far as the number of the cases reported is concerned, highest number of cases are reported of Lung cancer, throat cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer and food pipe caner. Presently 80-100npateints are receiving treatment every day at this center”, he says. “Presently there is team of five doctors catering to the needs of the cancer patients. The main problem which we confront is that in Jammu And Kashmir State we have only two centers to treat cancer. One is in Kashmir and the other in Jammu. In Jammu patients from other state also come for treatment. Presently atlesat 1500 fresh patients are reporting yearly”, says Ashutosh. Though he says that there is shortage of paramedical staff in the center "More than 1500 fresh cases are registered at the department every year, which has put a challenge before the Centre, and there is basically shortage of manpower, especially the paramedics in the center”, he adds. “There is shortage of paramedical staff and that is the biggest problem. The center needs atleast 5 chemotherapy nurses whereas the requirement is atleast 5 nurses, in the same way there are only 6 radiotherapy technicians, but the center needs minimum of 10. Even there is shortage of ward boys, which though hinders the smooth functioning. . We have already sent the requisition to the higher ups and is awaiting for response,” says Dr Ashutosh.
Apart from this, the Centre has just three doctors, who have to cater to the patients from the whole province. As per the figures, they clearly show the increasing trend in the number of the cancer cases. In 2004, the patients registered were 1164, in 2005 the number was 1188, in 2006 the number was 1266, in the year 2007 the count was 1365, in 2008 the number increased to 1385, in 2009 the count was 1500 and in the previous year 1600 cases came into fore.
