Legislators demand raise in CDF | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 23: The legislators have sought an increase in the constituency development fund (CDF) to execute developmental projects in their respective constituencies effectively. The MLAs, it may be mentioned, get Rs 50 lakh each for development of their constituency. A Congress legislator believes the amount was not sufficient for repair and renovation of even three roads in his constituency. “Since my constituency continues to be backward and under-developed a lot of developmental schemes were needed implemented”, he said. His concern is equally shared by a PDP MLA. He needs around one crore for the development of his constituency. A BJP MLA refers to his constituency which is crowded with haphazard markets and broken lanes and drains. "With a meager CDF I am not in a position to carry out repair of all these broken lanes and drains", he said. The MLAs, according to a Panthers Party legislator don't have the powers to spend even Rs 100 on development except the amount sanctioned under CDF. He said the matter has been hanging for the last sever al months and "we had hoped that the Government will announce a suitable raise in the CDF during the current budget session of the state legislature but so far nothing has been done." The legislators refer to the budget proposals in the Delhi state Assembly where the finance Minister has suggested an increase in the CDF by Rs.50 lakhs. If the proposals are accepted each MLA would be entitled to get R s.2.50 crore as CDF. They said that since the internal resources in Jammu and Kashmir were meager the Government should at least raise the CDF to one crore which alone can help them in seeing small development works getting executed.
