Geelani’s speech in India Today Conclave `Self determination will result in division of JK’ | | | Beyond news Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 23: Hurriyat chairman, Syed Ali Geelani while addressing the India today Conclave last week stressed need for enforcement of right to self determination. Geelani wants this right for all the people of the state, people close to him have made clear time and again. Geelani has been opposing division of the state as well. But can self determination and unity of state go together in a state like Jammu Kashmir where people profess different faiths and speak different languages. Is Geelani aware of the aspirations of the people of Jammu region? Does he know what the people in Ladakh want? People close to Geelani say that the Jammu Hindus and Ladakh Buddhists will also exercise their franchise when a referendum to ascertain the wishes of the people is held. This means, the minorities will have to abide by the decision of the majority. Or to put it plainly, the will of the majority shall be thrust on the minority. Self determination, as is evident, means a decision taken by a person out of his free will and consent without any coercion from any quarter whatsoever. When a person takes a decision concerning his future, he is said to have exercised his right to self determination. But when the decision of the majority is imposed on a minority, it can be anything but self determination. Jammu Kashmir has heterogeneous population. When Geelani talks about unity of the state, he has to take measures to ensure it. How to achieve the goal? By imposing the will of the majority on a reluctant minority, the state can be held together for some time but for upholding this unity the very purpose and object of self determination shall be defeated.
