`Nobody can deny JK its honour, dignity’
Mufti aghast over detentions
3/24/2011 11:08:01 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar March 24: Peoples Democratic Party patron and former Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said no one can deny Jammu and Kashmir its place of honour, dignity and peace and its people justice and a fair deal.
Interacting with various groups of people at Islamabad, Anantnag today he asserted that the struggle and sacrifices of people would bear fruit sooner than later and reiterated his party’s commitment to these objectives. District Vice President Anantnag, Abdul Rahim Rather, Youth State Secretary Imran Amin Shah, Zonal President Adv Javaid Ahmed, District Youth President Mateen Ahmed, and others were also present on this occasion.
Mufti said the people of the state especially Kashmir and other vulnerable areas had suffered for decades seeking attention to their genuine demands and problems that arose out of regional developments in which they had no role. In the process we are faced with a situation that is antithetical to the democratic ethos and institutional justice which our country prides in, he said. He expressed confidence that this situation would not last long and there would have to be a way out of it.

The PDP patron said his party had launched a concerted campaign since the beginning of this year that focuses the specific issues of civil liberties, human rights, restoration of full civil authority, reduction of forces and scrapping of draconian laws that have outlived their utility. These issues, he pointed out, were being flagged by other parties as well and it was time that this consensus is utilized to identify a starting point in resolving the Kashmir imbroglio that has bedevilled the South Asian region for long and resulted in immense miseries to people of the state.

Mufti said the present scenario in which people have forcefully rejected violence and adopted democratic means with the state responding through harsh force will have to yield room to a full play of democratic functioning that could remove mistrust and lift the siege around day to day life. Rejecting the statistics offered by the state government at the drop of the hat to prove its point Mufti said it is the atmosphere that matters. “The fear and insecurity can’t go away by citing cold statistics to people whose lives have been made miserable through crackdowns and wanton arrests” he said and stressed that even a single detention without reason should be a reason for concern not to speak of the hundreds the government itself acknowledges.
Referring to the recent Amnesty International report on detentions in the state Mufti said these are facts that are known to the state government. “Why should the state government or the chief minister need a global watchdog to tell it what is happening under their nose” Mufti wondered while commenting on the chief minister’s remarks that he would consider the report “after he receives it”. He said the unbridled use of force by the state government and its efforts to create an imaginary doomsday scenario are part of the same tactic to divert attention from its failures and enforce artificial normalcy.

Mufti said the failure of the government to punish the killers of 117 innocent persons last year speaks volumes about its insensitivity and arrogance of power. Recalling how innocent young boys were dragged out of their homes in Islamabad in broad day light and killed in cold blood, Mufti regretted that in spite of evidence and chief minister’s declaration of punishing the culprits “in 24 hours” the case was going at a snail’s pace. He said this credibility deficit of the government contrasted starkly with the unnecessary row over genuineness of the age certificate of a young schoolboy Faizan from the same town who has been slapped the dreaded PSA.
Referring to the developmental needs of the area Mufti urged the need for implementing the plans for a medical college in Anantnag. He said the District Hospital was designed to cater to the needs of a medical college and with the South campus of Kashmir University having come up in the town it should not need much effort to set it up soon. He also stressed the need to decongest the town and provide a bye pass to the Anantnag Kokernag Road. He also visited Bijbehera and went to the house of Peer Ahmadullah Shah and expressed deep condolences with the bereaved family on his sad demise.
