Farooq’s remarks have not upset us: PDP
11/15/2006 12:01:00 AM
Jammu, Nov 14
The PDP leadership has not been unnerved by Dr Farooq Abdullah’s provocations saying that the idea of self-rule was hollow and if the PDP had something in mind why does not it come forward with its document on self-rule. The provocation does not seem to have goaded Mufti Mohd.Sayeed to rush through the exercise.
“We do not worry about what Dr Farooq Abdullah has to say,”said Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir,a member of the committee constituted by the PDP for preparing the draft on self-rule concept.” Mr Mir said today “we are on the job of preparing the document and Dr Abdullah’s false alarm bells do not upset us.”
He said that it may take yet another one month to finalise the draft.”We have to discuss it with Mufti Mohd.Sayeed who is away to the United States, where he had gone as head of unofficial Indian delegation to the UN General Assembly.”In reply to a question he said that “I do not know the exact date when Mufi Sahib will return to Jammu. He may be here within next 10 to 15 days.”
Taking advantage of the delay in finalizing the draft on self-rule Dr Farooq Abdullah continues to campaign against the concept floated by Mufti Mohd.Sayeed.Addressing series of public rallies and cultural functions in the Jammu region in recent days Dr Farooq Abdullah, while challenging the PDP leadership to get the self-rule plan adopted by the state legislature, has described it “hollow”.He has even accused the PDP leadership of “misleading people while campaigning in favour of implementing the self-rule concept for settling the Kashmir issue.”
The Congress, which shares power with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir, has not lent support to the self-rule idea despite Prime Minister,Dr Manmohan Singh’s recent announcement that self-rule and autonomy could be discussed in the roundtable conferences.Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad has suggested to the PDP leadership not to rake up the self-rule idea in public but instead allow it to be discussed in the working Group, constituted on the advice of the Prime Minister, and the roundtable conference. He has even hinted that if it was not done the lines dividing the two partners could get sharpened.
However,PDP General secretary,Mr Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, said that “we have been simplying explaining the broader contours of self-rule to people so that they understand its importance for resolving the Kashmir issue.” He said that Mufti Mohd.Sayeed has announced,on several occasions, that the idea of self-rule has to be implemented through a consensus.
