Jammu, Mar 24: Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, it seems, is not satisfied with the job entrusted to him by the party high command. He has been busy creating problems for the state's Congress Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz. The Union Health Minister has been held responsible for Congress ailment in the state.
Azad started washing `dirty linen' in public in the summer capital last year when his supporters `demonstrated' their strength near the Press Enclave. They shouted slogans against Soz. A couple of days later, Soz's supporters came out on the streets and accused Azad of eying the prized post of Pradesh Congress Committee Chief. However, the seniors intervened and Azad announced that he had nothing to do with state politics in future.
Azad, however, could not keep his promise. Early this year he addressed a rally at Jammu which was strongly resented by the party high command. A few days later, Soz also addressed a rally and the internal bickering came to the fore yet again.
The situation took an ugly turn a few days ago when rival factions exchanged blows. The State's Congress in charge has informed the party high command that Azad was responsible for weakening the party in Jammu Kashmir.
People close to Azad give the credit of revival of Congress in Jammu Kashmir to him. According to him Congress gained ground in Jammu Kashmir when Azad headed the party. However, his rivals hold a contrary view. "There is no denying the fact that the Congress performed remarkably well when Azad was the in charge but he failed as Chief Minister especially during the last year of his term."
An analysis of last months of Azad's regime reflects his helplessness. "He ran short of ideas and caused a wedge between Kashmir and Jammu. Both the regions of the state suffered. Around 70 people died in police action", said a political activist.
What is Azad up to? The question haunts the Congress workers. Currently Azad is supposed to keep the country in good health. While his performance as country's health minister remains to be assessed, he has been held responsible for the ailment of Congress in Jammu Kashmir. |
