workshop on “Water Resources of Western Himalaya: Problems and Possibilities”, organized | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 25: Western Himalayan region is the mainstay of the Himalayan water tower holding more than 90% of glacier and cryospheric resources of India. Major rivers of the region namely; the Ganga, the Yamuna, the Sutlej, the Beas, the Chenab, the Jhelum, the Zanskar, the Indus, the Shyok and the Nubra, all originate from the mighty Himalayas contributing immensely to the development of the region. These rivers carry abundant water to the northern plains and sustain millions of people; while the mountain population is solely dependent on precipitation, springs and groundwater. In many areas of the Western Himalayan region, water resources are under-developed and have numerous possibilities for future prospecting. As challenges and possibilities offered by different hydrologic regimes of the Himalaya are distinct, no single management plan can work efficiently for the whole region. As part of the World Water Day – 2011 celebrations, one-day regional workshop was organized on March 25, 2011 by the Western Himalayan Regional Centre (WHRC), Jammu of National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) on “Water Resources of Western Himalaya: Problems & Possibilities”. The workshop was inaugurated by the Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Govt. of J & K, Jenab Taj-Mohi-Ud-Din. In his inaugural address, the Minister emphasized on the water conservation and judicious utilization of every drop of water. He emphasized that such workshops and seminars provide useful opportunity to the water professionals to actively interact and exchange research results. Around 60 participants from various State and Central Departments, Universities, R & D organizations, and NGOs attended the workshop. Two technical sessions were organized in the workshop. Total 10 scientific presentations covering areas related to snow and glacier studies, climate change impact assessment, watershed management, groundwater exploration, streamflow estimation, water related issues in western Himalayan region etc. were made. Few priority areas for future research in the state of Jammu & Kashmir also identified. The organizing committee will forward these recommendations to the Govt. of Jammu & Kashmir.
