Power goof up: State’s own generation not able to meet demands
3/25/2011 9:45:01 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 25: Despite tall claims of streamlining power supply, the Power Development Department (PDD) has once again started long power cuts in entire Jammu region before the onset of summer.
As per the government record, state needs 2500 megawatt (MWs) of electricity, but the generation is just 1500 MW and the backlog is being imported from Northern Grid. Till date the total generation of electricity from the state's water resources has gone to over 2318 MWs, out of which 1560 MWs are in the central sector.
It is pertinent mentioning here that since 2004, the state government started a massive project to streamline the power sector in Jammu and Kashmir and PDD had taken many steps to control the power losses and increase the revenue collection, but it has remain a failure.
During the last many years, the state has been witnessing the several shortage of electricity. The irony to the distribution system is that the period of the load shedding is increased in the Jammu region during the summer month when people need electricity for keeping their ACs, fans, coolers.
According to report, the installation of meters in Jammu and Kashmir to prevent the misuse of electricity by the consumers has failed in its mission as most of the areas though covered by these meters have so far failed to prevent power piliferation.
Interestingly, huge number of government offices in the Jammu city continue wasting electricity.
When contacted Chief Engineer PDD Mohammad Qasim said that the state need 2500 MV of electricity, but at present the department are able to produce only 1500 MV. He further said that the department are managing this electricity by curtailing it to about 8 hours in the areas where electronic meters are not installed and 4 hours in the areas where meters are installed.
“The department also keep check on electricity theft, ” he added.
