Indian youth reluctant to join army
3/25/2011 9:46:18 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 25: Shortage of officers in the defence forces gives a clear indication that Indian youth are reluctant to join the armed forces.
Despite the fact that Indian armed forces are considered to be one of the best and largest forces in the world, the defence sources are saying that there is an acute shortage of officers in the three Services, including pilots in Indian Air force.
Official Sources revealed that the extent of shortage of officers is around 12,349 in the Army, 1,818 in the Navy and 837 in the Airforce. The shortage of Pilots in Airforce is about 426. Given this lacuna, the Defence authorities have undertaken sustained image projection and publicity campaign to create awareness among the youth on the advantages of taking up a challenging and satisfying career. Awareness campaigns, participation in career fairs and exhibitions, advertisements in print and electronic media, motivational lectures in schools, colleges are some of the other measures that are being taken to attract youth.
However the shortage is within the officers’ rank only. There is no significant problem of shortage of personnel below Officer Rank (PBOR) in the Armed Forces. According to the official sources, in the year 2009-2010, the total number of army officers recruited was 3929, yet there has been a need of more than 12000 army officers. Navy has recruited 1066 officers and needs 1818 more, while the Air force has recruited 1260 officers in the last two years and needs 837 more officers.
Recruitment of officers in the Armed Forces is done on All India basis and not state-wise. The existing recruitment centres for recruitment of officers are considered sufficient. Therefore, at present, there is no proposal to open new recruitment centres for recruitment of PBOR in the three Services. All officers including those in Short Service Commission (SSC) are now eligible to hold substantive rank of Captain, Major and Lieutenant Colonel after 2, 6 and 13 years of reckonable services respectively. But despite all these initiatives, Indian armed forces are short of 13612 officers.
