Charak clarifies, says ready to demit office for someone better

JAMMU, Mar 25: Clarifying the issue of having five star hotel in historic Mubarak Mandi complex which was the royal residence of Dogra rulers, Vice-Chairman (VC) Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society (MMJHS) Gulchain Singh Charak stated that re-use plan of Mubarak Mandi includes creation of heritage hotel in one of the blocks of 25 block complex.
Talking to media persons here today, Charak today termed the reports misleading and baseless. “Members of state legislative assembly who protested and raised this issue have been misled”, he said, suspecting a conspiracy against Historic Mubarak Mandi.
Giving more details, he said that in the governing body meeting held on January 11, 2010 under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, floating of expression of interest for Heritage Hotel in the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex was approved. He added that the project was approved under PPP mode and duly approved by the executive committee.
“Expression of interest floated is based on the initial recommendations of INTACH for reuse to generate revenue for the maintenance of the Complex at the international standard as the state cannot afford to finance such a complex”, he said, adding that While the others are Craft Bazar, Museum, Emporia, Research Centre, Photo Gallery, archive storage, library, reading rooms, Art Conservation, Meeting rooms, documentation centre and display of Jammu’s history.
He said that vide GAD Order No. 561 of 2008 dated 23-4-2008, Mubarak Mandi heritage Complex was transferred to the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Society for conservation and management purposes, adding that INTACH, New Delhi was entrusted task of preparing a Vision Plan for the Mubarak Mandi heritage Complex. As per the DPRs submitted by the INTACH, New Delhi, the total cost of restoration of various buildings worked out as Rs 235.92 crore.
He maintained that if there is anyone else competent enough to run the show, he is ready to demit office. He appealed to the public in general and representatives of political parties in particular to fully cooperate and guided the society, by giving valuable suggestions and guidance by visiting the complex whenever it is possible.
Charak also appealed Chief Minister (Chairman of Governing Body) to constitute a committee of some senior citizens/experts to look into the issues raised by the members in the legislative Assembly and bring the whole facts before the House and the public. Prof Zahoor-ud-din, Major General (Retd) G S Jamwal and T S Wazir members of the society were also present in the press conference.
