J&K to install traffic signals in Srinagar, Jammu cities soon: Sagar

JAMMU, Mar 25: Minister for Rural Development Department Ali Mohammad Sagar in reply to a calling attention notice by the Prof Chaman Lal Gupta regarding growing traffic hazards in Jammu City informed the House that there has been a phenomenal growth in the number of motor vehicles in the entire state without a proportionate increase in the road length/ infrastructure, as a result of which traffic congestion on roads particularly in capital cities has become a routine.
He said that about 50,000 vehicles are being added to the vehicle population annually in the twin cities of Jammu and Srinagar. Minister said that till March 2010, the vehicular population in Jammu City stood at 4,04,400 excluding vehicles belonging to Security Forces and Tourists entering the city. On the other hand, road length in Jammu city is 704.22 kms which means that the density of vehicles in Jammu city is 574 vehicles per kilometre.
Sagar said that government is seized of the problem and has initiated short-term and long term measures to overcome it. Government has appointed a High powered Committee to look into the proposals of the re-organization of the Traffic Wing of the J&K Police; he said and added that the committee has recommended creation of 1946 posts of various categories in the Traffic wing of the J&K Police in three phases. 653 posts were created in the first phase.
He said that in pursuance of Cabinet decision, RITES Limited have been engaged to prepare a comprehensive Transport Mobility Plan for capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu. The cost offer and other terms and conditions have been discussed with RITES Ltd. by a Committee of Administrative Secretaries. The terms and conditions as approved by the Committee are being placed before the Cabinet for approval, after which a Memorandum of Understanding shall be signed with RITES.
