| JK loses Rs 8650 Cr as Punjab plays truant | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 25: The government on Friday said that the State has suffered losses to the tune of Rs 8650 crore on account of failure to implement bilateral agreement between Punjab and JK over Thein Dam Hydroelectric project in the state. In a written reply to the question of PDP MLA, AR Veeri in Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, said that J&K has suffered Rs 8650 crore losses due to non-implementation of bilateral agreement between J&K and Punjab drawn in January 1979 over Thein Dam project in Kathua district of the state.
Giving breakup, he said that the state exchequer incurred loss of Rs 2350 crore on account of due share of 20 per cent of power generation on Thein Dam project since 2000. Similarly, Rs 6300 crore was loss to the state for not providing its due 65 million cusic of water flow share from River Ravi which could have been used for irrigating 10500 acres of land in Jammu division, Abdullah said.
"The Government of Punjab has failed to honour its commitment under bilateral agreement of January 1979 to release full share of 65 million cusic of Ravi water to the state despite lapse of more than 20 years, thereby depriving the state of its allocated share of water," he said. |
