India, Pak to Set Up Second International Gate | | | ATTARI (AMRITSAR): With a view to improving movement of people and goods across the international border, India and Pakistan today discussed issues relating to border infrastructure in a meeting on the Indian side of the Indo-Pak border at Attari, here today. Pakistan delegation was led by Shabbir Ahmad, Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Interior, while the Indian side was headed by Sada Kant, Joint Secretary (Border Management), Ministry of Home Affairs. According to Deputy Commissioner Amritsar Kahan Singh Pannu who attended the meeting, the interaction was held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere. The two sides discussed issues relating to the development of the infrastructure, including construction of the Integrated Check Post (ICPs), at the Attari-Wagah border for travel and trade facilitation, he said. It was unanimously resolved between India and Pakistan that the location of the second gate at the zero line as proposed by Pakistan shall be adhered to. It was further agreed that the road coming from ICP on Indian side will be constructed to meet the alignment of road from Pakistan through the second gate. Adding further Pannu said that the exact location of the second gate and the proposed alignment of the road on both sides were approved on the ground after the field visit of the joint delegation team. "To construct the approach roads from the second gate towards respective ICPs/border crossing facilities and further to connect to the Amritsar-Lahore Highway on the respective sides within a suggested time period of six months from here onwards. To sanitise the area around the second gate, the Indian side may construct a cattle fence in its territory," Pannu added. Adding further, Pannu said, "the next meeting of the joint technical group between India and Pakistan is proposed to be held by mid-June 2011 to review the progress in this regard." The 8-member Pakistan delegation comprised Shabbir Ahmad Joint Secretary Ministry of Interior, Mumammad Akhtar Director Dry Port National Logistics Cell, Abdul Khalil Director NCMC Ministry of Interior, Rubina Ather Joint Secretary Ministry of Commerce, Akhtar Ali Khan First Secretary (Trade) High Commission of Pakistan New Delhi, Brig Furukh Jamal Pakistan Rangers Punjab, Khawaja Umer Mahdi Collector Customs, Azhar Mehmood Dy Director Federal Investigation Agency, Pannu disclosed. The Indian team constituted of officers including Sada Kant Joint Secretary (Border Management) Ministry of Home Affairs, Kahan Singh Pannu Deputy Commissioner Amritsar, Chaman Rana DIG BSF, Sanjeev Banot DIG BSF, US Pandey Under Secretary Department of Commerce, Srikar Reddy Dy Secretary MEA, Ranjit Singh Commissioner Customs, S J S Kahlon Additional Commissioner Customs, Manish Priadarshi FRRO Bureau of Immigration and Arun Chaturvedi GM RITES. The ICP spread over 130 acres of land is being set up at Attari on which the Centre is spending a sum of Rs 120 crore. This is the first ICP among 13 which shall start functioning in the month of April. |
