Yellow Rust threat recedes with rise in temperature | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 26- Yellow Rust disease that posed a major threat to wheat crop in various areas of Kathua,Samba,Reasi,Udhampur and Jammu districts has started receding following rise in the temperature in the region. Scientists of SKUAST(J) said with the drop in temperature between December and February, yellow Rust disease surfaces affecting crops that are not resistent to the disease. A senior scientist said that it was unfortunate that the farmers had not been informed about the efficacy of using fungicide called "Tilt" which if used in advance keeps yellow rust away from the fields. Sources in the Department of Agriculture said that though yellow rust had hit wheat plants in various areas in Jammu, Samba, Reasi, Kathua, Udhampur districts still the gr in was intact. They explained that grain too would have been affected by yellow rust had not day and night temperature gone up suddenly. Scientists claimed that the two varieties of wheat, evolved by the university scientists, had been tested resistent to yellow rust. They said that not a single plant of these varieties had been hit by yellow rust. They said that even if some varieties were found to be resistant to yellow rust still there was need for spraying fungicides which could leave no chance for the disease to hit the crops. Referring to the disease the Minister for Agriculture, G.H.Mir, said that wheat crop in vast areas in Jammu,Kathua,Samba,Reasi and Udhampur district had been reportedly affected by yellow rust .H said the Government was examining these reports. He the Departmental officials and experts had been directed to survey the areas affected by yellow rust so that the Government could have some details about the extent of loss to the crop. In reply to a question Mir also confirmed that with improvement in day and night t temperature the disease had vanished. He said that as far as the question of r relief was concerned it would be considered by the Government after the Girdhawari was completed in April end. Mir suggested to the SKUAST(J) scientists to come forward and provide a package on disease control which could be conveyed to the farmers by the officials of the Department of Agriculture. He said let the University scientists explain to the Government whether the wheat varieties grown in Jammu region were resistant to yellow rust or not. If they were not let the scientists recommend those varieties which were resistant to yellow rust and other diseases.
