Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 26: The police seem determined to ensure peace in the Valley on Wednesday when Pakistan play India in the semi-final of the ICC world cup at Mohali. An appeal by the police urging CRPF and the general public to display `sportsman spirit’ during the much awaited encounter; reflects the desperation of the police. It also reflects the fragility of the peace that the police claim to have restored to the trouble torn Valley.

The sale of fire crackers has registered an all time high during the past few days in Srinagar. The people and the CRPF personnel posted at various locations in the city are busy purchasing crackers. Pertinent to mention some people in old town and Batmaloo area burst crackers when Pakistan beat West Indies in the first quarter final of the ICC World Cup. When India beat Australia in the second quarter final, the CRPF personnel celebrated the win by bursting hundreds of crackers in the old city. The CRPF celebrations evoked severe response from the people. Police had to chase away the agitating mobs at several places to prevent the situation from taking an ugly turn.

India-Pakistan cricket match has always “driven the people mad” especially in Srinagar. And with people purchasing crackers in bulk, the city has been compared to a “keg of gunpowder” which needs just a spark to explode.

Whatever the result of the match, crackers shall be burst. If Pakistan wins, the people will come out to celebrate in a big way. And, if India wins, the security personnel may do what they did after India-Australia match. While the rivals in blue and green will definitely shake hands after the encounter at Mohali, the belligerents in Srinagar streets will not. And, this is where the trouble lies.

Fortunately there are a good number of people who want peace. While hailing the police for urging restraint after the crucial match, they too want the `belligerents’ to take the result sportingly.
