PDP rejects joint opposition candidate for Jammu seat | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu Mar 27: PDP is likely to feel its own candidate for one upper house seat from Jammu Region the elections of which are scheduled to be held on April 13, According to sources PDP is confident of getting the requisite support from 29 MLAs for victory of its candidate. Sources said PDP chief patron and former Chief Minister of the state Mufti Mohammed Sayeed has given directives to the senior leaders of his party in this regard. Mr. Sayeed according to sources has outrightly turned down the suggestion of some of his party leaders advocating for supporting a combined opposition candidate for one of the upper house seats from Jammu region to ensure his 100 percent victory. Sources said Mr. Mufti while turning down the suggestion of his partymen has asked them to work for their own candidates from Jammu region also instead of advocating for a join opposition candidate. The PDP which has 21 members in the assembly needs a support of 8 more members to win the seat from Jammu. The party is expecting support from three NPP MLAs and a couple of independents which can take to the victory margin provided it seeks support from three more members eiyher from ruling alliances or opposition BJP. Sources said with internal bickering in coalition and some MLAs within NC having a resentment against the party will not hesitate in making it a cakewalk for PDP candidate provided the party does not issue a whip. Sources said BJP was also toeing the idea of fielding a joint opposition candidate to ensure his victory and checkmate the Congress-NC alliance. The name of a prominent lawyer who is having proximity with both PDP and BJP was also figured in this regard. But Mr. Sayeed has outrightly rejected the suggestion the sources added. |
