CM's trendy gizmos, laptos and `conservative' legislators | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 27: Much to Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's dismay, the MLAs have not been seen with their laptops during the past one year. The laptops were given to the legislators for maintaining records of their respective constituencies effectively. The conservative approach of the legislators has been seen as a major stumbling block to introduce use of technology in the day to day functioning of the Legislative Assembly. It is no secret that when Omar Abdullah flaunts his trendy gizmos other legislators envy him but irony is that they have not changed their mindset or realizing the importance of staying connected all the time for better world view and ease of communication. Omar has been making best possible use of technology. He tweets regularly and has a penchant for latest handset models and other tools to upgrade his armory. He occupies driving seat on his favorite four wheel and whenever possible he takes precious time out to enjoy his favoirte sport and leisure activities. The same cannot be said about all other legislators as they exhibit a picture which is in total contrast to the one exuded by the young Chief Minister. Though there are select few legislators who rely on latest technology and make maximum use of it but those belonging to older generation still rely on conservative methods and techniques to do their office work and maintain record of their constituencies and DTP work. Last year the state Chief Minister had cleared a proposal to handover personal laptops to all the members of the state legislature but very few of them making use of it for the purpose it was handed over to them. There are very few instances where a legislator has been spotted even holding his laptop in the state assembly leave aside spending quality time on it. The personal assistants and private staff of majority of MLA's, cutting across party lines revealed that after receiving the laptops most of them have either handed over the same to their family members or dumped them in their offices for use by their personal staff. The MLA's who do not know how to use the laptop have not shown any urgency to attend classes to learn the basics. At the time of finalizing the proposal the Chief Minister had expressed hope that with the help of the latest technology the MLA's would be able to maintain record of their constituency profiles and would be able to project the needs and genuine problems of the masses for speedy disposal. But it seems the much hyped scheme of handing over laptops to public representatives have fallen flat as most of them have failed to acquaint themselves with the latest technology. |
