| Farooq PROMISES 30 LAKH FOR eye EQUIPMENT | | | Srinagar, Nov 14 ( Former chief minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah today promised 30 lakh rupees out of his MP fund for the purchase of a hi-tech machine for the treatment of eye ailments in the valley. Farooq also appealed the doctors to prescribe diet chart for patients according to local food tastes and also extend the awareness campaign to far flung areas so that diabetes patients benefit from the campaign. The National Conference patron was speaking at a function organized by Rotary Club Of Kashmir on the world's diabetes day aimed at creating awareness among patients about the preventive measures for lowering its rate of occurrence. Abdullah was moved by the appeal made by Dr. Khursheed Iqbal, an ophthalmologist, who spoke at the function preceding him and mentioned that latest laser eye testing machines were required to provide treatment diabetes patients who develop eye related ailments. The former Chief Minister, who has himself been a diabetic for a many years, said that efforts were needed to carry forward tye mission of awareness so that incidence of diabetes in the state could be reduced and for this cause government should provide facilities so that doctors can reach different areas with this message. "Doctors can take the cooperation of the rotary club of Kashmir and with the infrastructure available, a difference can be made," Farooq said. As Farooq spoke in his characteristic style, while the audience burst with laughter, it was also moved by the appeals made by the former Chief Minister about the problems faced by diabetes patients. Quoting from his personnel experience, he said that doctors many a times act callously in treating a patient that plunges a patient into deep trouble later in his life. "Spurious drugs are available in the market and that is not known to a patient who consumes them as he believes that the doctors' prescription," Farooq said. "It is the responsibility of the doctors to aware people so that the spurious drugs are controlled." Farooq in his address appealed the doctors to spend the funds that he has promised honestly and transmit the benefits of the new equipment to the people. Making the audience laugh by his gestures, Farooq said, "Even a patient like me closes his eyes and pleads with the death angel to return as the time is not right yet as I too take a lot of stuff that is not good for a diabetic." "But diabetes demands following a strict diet schedule and for that I request the doctors to prescribe one that includes rice and not chapatti otherwise everyone has to marry a chapatti banane wali (one who can make chapattis)," the Rajya Sabha Member continued. |
