No 'consensus' yet on seatsharing, to meet again today | LC polls: coalition partners hold meeting | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 27: In run up to the forthcoming elections for the seats of Legislative Council, the two coalition partners National Conference and Congress held a meeting today to discuss the issues related to polls, seat sharing being the main agenda on which no agreement could materialise so far. The leaders of the alliance partners will meet tomorrow again to finalise things on this front, March 31 being the last date for filing nominating papers. Six seats, 3 each of Kashmir and Jammu region are falling vacant in the Upper House next month. Sources said both the alliance partners could not arrive at any consensus on the seat sharing issue as the political interests of both parties clashed on the number of seats each desires to contest. Sources said while NC has asked its major ally Congress to leave one seat for it in Jammu region, Congress is believed to have put its foot down maintaining that both the partners would contest on 3 seats each, which means that it contest all the three seats in Jammu and allow NC to contest all the three seats of Kashmir region. The NC is apparently asking for a 'safe' seat from Jammu as in the event of issuance of separate notifications, a technical aspect of the LC polls, its rival PDP has the chances of winning one seat from Kashmir. It may be mentioned that out of three Jammu seats, one seat is in reserved category from Poonch. Sources said 'safe seat' interest of both the parties became a hurdle to arrive at some consensus on the seat sharing issue between the coalition partners in the meeting today . As NC is adamant on contesting on one seat from Jammu, the disinclination of the Congress to 'surrender' one seat from Jammu. As there was no consensus as to how many seats each alliance partner would contest, the coalition partners will meet tomorrow again to finalise the matter , apparently after seeking opinion and view point from high commands of the respective parties, sources added. Though it is the Coordination committee of the coalition partners which is meant to sort out matters of mutual interest and those where some differences persist, was supposed to meet today but due to non availability of senior most leaders of both the parties including PCC chief, Prof Saif-u-Din Soz, who happens to be the chairman, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister and Patron of the National Conference Dr Farooq Abdullah , the senior leaders from both the parties, some of whom are the basic members of the Coordination Committee met here today to discuss the key matters related to LC polls. The coalition partners, besides the key issue of seat sharing arrangement, also discussed electoral prospects and the overall strategy to be adopted by them in order to 'minimise' the chances of the opposition to grab any seat. The NC was represented by two cabinet ministers AR Rather and Ali Mohammad Sagar besides MLC Ajay Sadhotra , the Congress leaders who were authorised to represent the party and its view point on vital aspects of the elections included cabinet minister Sham Sharma, senior Vice president of PCC Amrit Malhotra and chief spokesperson as well as MLC of the party Ravinder Sharma. |
